Peter sat glowering into the fire he’d built upon returning to Ian’s home. He’d been a fool to think Ellen Reese might need someone to look after her

“I’d hate to be the object of that anger on your face,” Ian said, easing himself into his favorite chair. “Can I assume you met Charles and don’t approve of him?”

Peter had been so intent on his own thoughts, he hadn’t heard his host arriving home. “No. I haven’t met Charles. But I have seen the real Miss Reese, and I wish Charles the best of luck. He’ll be needing it.”

“That sounds rather ominous,” Ian noted.

“She’s a liar and a gold digger. I can’t believe I let myself get fooled by a woman again.”

“A liar and a gold digger? Those are pretty harsh accusations.”

“I can understand the lie,” Peter admitted grudgingly. “And if it happened the way she said it did, then I might be being a little unfair on that point. But she is a gold digger. Her fiancé is Charles Tucker of Tucker, Inc. She’s just playing him along, making him squirm to get her books deeper into him. Then she’ll reel him in, hook, line and sinker.”

Ian studied him thoughtfully. “I thought you were worried about the fiancé being the heel. Didn’t you tell me he had an affair with another woman?”

“Too bad for him, but lucky for Miss Reese. She should be able to use that indiscretion to her advantage for the entire length of their marriage. It’s my guess she’ll never let him live it down.”

Ian frowned. “Are you sure you aren’t having a knee-jerk reaction...putting too much of your former wife into this Ellen Reese? You were young and naive about women when you married Nancy. And, as I’ve always suspected, you never really worked through your anger when she betrayed you.”

Peter hunched further down in his chair. “Ellen caught her fiancé with another woman. It hurt her so badly she got herself into a life-and-death situation. I’ll bet if he wasn’t wealthy, she’d never consider taking him back.”

“Or it could be that she really loves the man...or did love him, and now that love has been damaged and she’s uncertain about what to do. Some women do have honest feelings. My Rachel did.”

Peter continued to glower at the fire. “You’re right about Nancy. I was furious with her for betraying me, but I was angrier with myself. I’d bought into all her lies. I felt like a fool. You warned me about her, but I wouldn’t listen.”

“She was a real looker.” Ian eyed him speculatively. “Miss Reese appeared to be a little more down-to-earth in the looks department. Of course, the reception on my television wasn’t very good.”

“She’s nice enough looking. Nothing spectacular. Brownest eyes I’ve ever seen. Nice curves.” Suddenly realizing his voice had become husky, Peter clamped his mouth shut.

Ian’s grinned. “So you were attracted to her?”

“I’ve been without female companionship for a while.”

“And did she show any signs of being attracted to you?” Ian probed.
